  Thanks. I think some of the others in this discussion have helped me with how I should understand this when I obtain LR 5. And it does seem reasonable to just use LR 5 once I convert the LR 3 catalog to LR 5. I'm guessing that the LR 3 catalog just becomes a part of the LR 5 catalog. Then I will have just one catalog and only need to use LR 5. Fair enough. And as I said to Josh, my external file system works well for me and is consistent with my reasons for using LR as a develop tool in the first place. Any thoughts however on when LR 6 will come out and will it be available in both cloud and download form?? And what changes will it contain?
