that particular example is pretty simple, 3 grouped semicircles:
for the solid ball in the middle, the inner circle is trimmed from the outer two (in pathfinder), ungrouped, then the outer two are grouped together. then they just have opposite revolve settings (so here the outer is revolved 260 degrees, and the inner 100 degrees)
