Under more recent versions of OS X, the thumbnails of DNG's didn't appear in the Finder (and they are useful to be able to see). I can't recall which version, 10.8 or subset of 10.9 but now thumbs do appear under 10.9.3. So the Finder has been buggy in this respect and Apple knows about it.
